Effective ownership: the number that decides your rank
Your points don't move your rank. Your points compared with everyone else's do. Effective ownership is how you measure everyone else before the goals go in.
Your real opponent is the average team
Every gameweek, every manager in the game scores something, and your rank moves according to how your score compares with all of theirs. Score 60 in a week where the average is 50 and you climb. Score 60 in a week where the average is 81, as it was in the second gameweek of this season, and you fall, despite a perfectly decent week.
So the question that matters before a match kicks off isn't "will this player score?" It's "if he scores, who else benefits?" A goal for a player in half the teams in the game barely shifts the standings, because half the field moves with you. A goal for a player nobody owns moves you past everyone. Effective ownership puts a number on that.
What the number actually is
Plain ownership is the percentage of teams that have a player in their squad. Effective ownership, usually shortened to EO, refines it in two ways. It only counts teams where he is actually in the starting eleven, because a benched player scores nothing for his owner. And it counts captains twice, because the captain's score is doubled, and a triple-captained player three times.
So a player who starts for 40% of teams and wears the armband for 20% of them has an EO of 60%. Put another way: the average team collects 0.6 of whatever he scores. If he scores 10, the average team gets 6 from him. That figure is the benchmark you're being measured against.
A worked example
Take a forward with 45% starting ownership who is captained by 20% of teams. His EO is 65%. He scores a goal, plays the full match and picks up two bonus points: 4 for the goal, 2 for the appearance, 2 bonus, 8 in total. The average team gains 8 × 0.65 = 5.2 points from him. Now compare four managers.

Notice that the owner who merely started him gained less than three points on the field. The player did his job and the manager barely moved. That is what owning the template feels like: safe, and slow. Notice too that not owning a 65% EO player who scores 8 costs about as much as your own captain blanking.
Now flip it. Same player, same EO, but he blanks: 2 points for the appearance. The field gains 1.3 from him. The owner gains 0.7 net; the non-owner loses 1.3. His blank is a win for the people who skipped him, but a small one. Heavily-owned players are asymmetric: their hauls hurt non-owners far more than their blanks help them. That asymmetry is why the crowd is on them in the first place.
The differential does the opposite
A midfielder started by 6% of teams and captained by almost nobody has an EO of about 6%. If he scores 12, the field gains 0.7 from him and his owners gain 11.3 net. If he scores 2, his owners still gain 1.9 net. The cost of a differential isn't the blank itself; it's the template player you didn't own instead. To judge a differential properly you compare two squads, not one player: the 6% man's 2 points against the 65% man's 8, a swing of about 6 once the EO adjustments are made.
EO at your rank, not the world's
The ownership figure the game shows you is across every team in the game, well over ten million this season. But you aren't racing all of them equally. If you're around the 100,000 mark, the teams that decide whether you climb or fall are the ones near 100,000, and their squads look different from the overall average: more premium players, fewer forgotten picks, and captaincy concentrated more heavily on the obvious choice.
That's why My Team shows each of your players' effective ownership at your rank rather than the game-wide figure, alongside the rank places each score is currently moving you. A player at 30% game-wide might be at 55% among teams near you, and your decision to leave him out is a much bigger bet than the headline number suggests.
The pitch caption tells you which version you're looking at. During a live gameweek it shows the current fixtures and effective ownership. Between gameweeks it shows the next fixtures and current ownership, because captaincy for the coming week hasn't been declared yet.
The mini-league version
In a league of eight, effective ownership stops being a percentage from a database and becomes something you can count. If six of your seven rivals own a player and you don't, his EO in your league is 75%, higher still if some have captained him. His 12 points cost you 12 against six people at once. If you own and captain him while three rivals also captain him, you gain nothing on those three and 12 on the other four.
That is the whole reason the mini-league is a different game from the world rankings, and it's the subject of Playing the mini-league, not the world. The short version: before you make a transfer, count how many rivals it puts you level with and how many it separates you from. The club pages help here, because rivals' squads tend to share a spine from two or three clubs, and a club's big week is a league's big swing.
What to do with it
Three habits. First, before every deadline, know the EO of your captain and of your two or three biggest absences; if you don't own a 60% player, you should be able to say why. Second, when you're ahead in a league, raise your overlap with the people chasing you, and when you're behind, lower it. Third, judge your week by the swing, not the score. A 55 on a week the field averages 50 is a good week, whatever the group chat says.
